Mother identifies son who shot her and killed two others

An 86-year-old Point Loma woman identified her son in court on Feb. 4 as the man who shot her and held up her hand to show she lost three fingers in the shootings that killed two other relatives.

June Bushby testified in the preliminary hearing of her son, William Bushby, 60, who is charged with attempted murder of her when he used a shotgun in the Aug. 21, 2024, incident.

June Bushby told San Diego Superior Court Judge Evan Kirvin that her son shot his sister, Laurie Robinson, who was in her 60s, and her grandson Brett Robinson, who was in his 30s. June Bushby said she was the last one shot.

William Bushby lived with his sister on the 3600 block of Zola Street for several years, several blocks away from Point Loma High School. Someone called police at 3:55 p.m. to report the shootings.

There was tension in the home regarding whether William Bushby would continue to still live there and police were called several times in the days before the shootings. No arrests were made.

Kirvin ordered William Bushby to stand trial on two counts of murder, attempted murder, and the special circumstance of committing multiple murders which would result in a life sentence without parole if he is convicted. Deputy District Attorney Scott Pirrello successfully asked he stand trial on all counts.

June Bushby said she was shot in the chest and showed her right hand to indicate her three missing fingers as a result of the shotgun blast.

Bushby was also ordered to trial on the allegation he committed great bodily injury on his mother, a senior who was over 70 years of age. This could add between 3-5 years to any prison sentence.

Bushby has pleaded not guilty to all charges and will return to court on Feb. 24. He remains in jail without bail.

Also testifying was Ryan Robinson, the son of Laurie Robinson and brother to Brett Robinson. Ryan Robinson also lived in Point Loma, and he testified his uncle seemed to be fearful he would be pushed out of the house.

Two police officers testified that William Bushby admitted to shooting all three family members. A medical examiner testified the deceased victims died from gunshot wounds.

Officers found William Bushby sitting on the front doorstep with his hands in the air when he saw them arrive. They seized a shotgun found in the home.
