San Diego FC to play St. Louis City in home opener

After a 2-0 upset win on the road over defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy to open regular-season play, San Diego FC plays St. Louis City SC on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in the team’s inaugural home match.

The game is expected to have the largest crowd in the stadium’s history, which opened on Aug. 20, 2022, for an SDSU Aztecs scrimmage, followed by a 38-20 loss on Sept. 3 to the Arizona Wildcats. SDFC is a 2:1 favorite according to the Las Vegas oddsmakers, which is the same odds that LA Galaxy had to win in the opener at Dignity Health Sports Park.

St. Louis City SC is coming off a scoreless draw versus the Colorado Rapids in its opener and is playing in its third season in MLS. St. Louis finished with the best record in the Western Conference in its rookie season of 2023 but missed the playoffs in 2024.

San Diego FC has outscored its opponents 8-0 in its last two games, which includes a preseason 6-0 defeat of the NY Red Bulls on Feb. 15 in the Coachella Valley Invitational finale.

“I think playing at home will be a pleasant experience,” said SDFC forward Hirving Lozano. “I think the fans will support us like they did in the game against LA Galaxy. The fans who traveled to that match represented well, and I think getting to play at home now will be a very special experience for everyone.”

Lozano got his first assist of the regular season after recovering a turnover in the 52nd minute and giving a perfect pass to teammate Anders Dreyer, who finished with a brace after scoring the insurance goal in the final moments versus the Galaxy.

San Diego FC also recently partnered with the Metropolitan Transit System, offering a special promotion for Pronto Card users who attend all of the club’s home games throughout the season.
