GUHSD names Svacina Counselor of the Year

The Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) recently announced that Brianne Svacina of El Cajon Valley High School has been named the District’s 2025 School Counselor of the Year. The announcement came as GUHSD joined school districts nationwide in honoring the contributions of all school counselors during National School Counseling Week, which ran from Feb. 3-7.

Svacina, an eight-year employee of GUHSD, has dedicated the past four years to El Cajon Valley High School. Before becoming a School Counselor, she spent four years at West Hills High School as a guidance information specialist.

A staff leader, she reportedly consistently takes on additional responsibilities to enhance student opportunities, including serving as a class advisor, organizing fundraising efforts for senior scholarships, facilitating lunchtime karaoke for students, assisting with after-school tutoring, and supporting programs that help ninth graders transition smoothly into high school.

Ms. Svacina is someone both students and staff turn to when they have questions or need advice,” said El Cajon Valley High School Principal Rob Stirling. “She builds strong, lasting relationships with all students and encourages them to be the best versions of themselves,” added Stirling.

Ms. Svacina is an outstanding counselor who works beyond her job description for the students and staff here at El Cajon Valley High School,” said El Cajon Valley Science Teacher Timothy Woolston. “On top of everything that she juggles on campus, she maintains an optimism and positivity that is infectious. She brightens everyone’s day and deserves this recognition for all of her hard work.”

The GUHSD Governing Board approved a special resolution at its Jan. 23 Governing Board meeting recognizing all of GUHSD’s school counselors in honor of National School Counseling Week.

GUHSD school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling.

Their training, experience, and commitment to students make them an integral part of the comprehensive educational program offered through GUHSD’s family of schools and programs.
